Under the overall header ‘The border – contemporary art zone’, a new project on contemporary art was
launched during the 2009 ‘fusion’ art fair Lineart at Flanders Expo.
After two editions, this key zone, has developed into a real independent art fair. It shows promotional art
galleries, mostly representing today’s young avant-garde.
Only contemporary art galleries can acquire a space in ‘The border’. The definite selection is subject to the
assessment of a jury, a curator or a selection committee . Quality is the decisive criterion.
‘The border’, unveils a selection of gallerists who provide a stunning presentation of the young avant-garde.
Exhibitors at The border 2011 benefit from various activities and extra projects, including an Entrance
Marker, a B-New Gallery Selection, a Gigacase, a Young Ones Award, Belgium Calling booths, a Gallery
Award and a gallery gathering award event.
We are going further down the road of success, and are keeping a finger on the pulse with more new
partners every year. In 2011, Francis Feidler (IKOB) took over from Joost Declercq (MDD) as chairman
of the general selection committee. Philippe Van Cauteren (S.M.A.K.) and Pierre-Olivier Rollin (BPS 22)
have now handed Johan Swinnen (VUB and Artesis) the keys to the Gigacase. Flor Bex (honorary-director
MUHKA) is extending his ‘B-New Gallery selection’-jury.
The border is definitely the most refreshing contemporary art fair in Flanders (near Brussels), hosting
international galleries selling only contemporary art. The border 2011 is a real selling art fair for collectors,
where contacts are made with visitors from home and abroad. The border 2011 (2-6 Dec 2011) also
features photography.
And last but not least, we welcome important collectors in the VIP & lecture lounge.
Galleries can apply for a stand in ‘The border’. They need to complete the form ‘Application for
participation’. The final decision as to whether or not they are selected lies with a selection committee.
